Strengthening the last link  in ocean-climate action — frontline communities

The Oceania Collective currently has 7 partners and members across 7 countries spanning the Pacific, who collectively possess decades of experience in successful community-led ocean and fisheries management:

OneReef Micronesia (Palau)

OneReef Micronesia empowers local communities across the region to protect coral reefs and island ecosystems through long-term partnerships. These provide resources such as sustainable financing and technical support that help communities of ocean stewards deal with today’s overwhelming challenges.

Rāhui Center

The Rāhui Center is a French Polynesian NGO that supports community-based coral reef ecosystems and resources management by bringing together scientific and local knowledge. This empowers communities by strengthening the autonomous and sustainable management of rāhui and other locally managed marine areas.

Ocean Kiribati

(used to be called Kiribati Islands Conservation Society)
Ocean Kiribati reflects the Pacific Ocean’s connection to the island nation of Kiribati, which is deeply intertwined with the lives of its people. Their mission is to inspire community-led sustainable ocean management and development for a healthy and prosperous ocean for Kiribati.

Locally Managed Marine Area Network (Fiji)

The Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) Network is a unique and diverse tapestry of communities, NGOs, government agencies and researchers all working together to promote food security and livelihoods through cost-effective, inclusive, and socially just, bottom-up approaches. They support community-led marine conservation across the Indo-Pacific by blending traditional knowledge with modern science to protect coastal ecosystems.

Nauru Fisheries and Marine Resources Authority

The Nauru Fisheries and Marine Resources Authority (NFMRA) is the official body responsible for overseeing all fisheries and marine resource activities in Nauru. It manages, protects, and develops Nauru’s marine resources, with a focus on sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and climate resilience.

Conservation Society of Pohnpei (Federated States of Micronesia)

The Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP) is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, enhancing, and promoting community-led resource management and sustainable development, with the vision of a safe, clean environment that honors the island’s cultural heritage.

Marshall Islands Conservation Society

The Marshall Islands Conservation Society (MICS) is a nonprofit dedicated to building awareness, support, and capacity for sustainable use of resources, conservation, and protection of biodiversity through the Reimaanlok process and Micronesia Challenge commitment. Their vision is People and Nature in Harmony, in which the Marshallese people reach a new equilibrium with nature, based on a combination of traditional resource management practices and scientific assessments and insights for the protection and management of target features, species, and locations.
